What are the Japanese lobbying hard to reinstate in 2020 Olympics?
Any particular sport, to be included in Olympics, it should be widely played around the world and meet a number of criteria established by the IOC session. A recognized sport can be added to the Olympic program on the recommendation of the IOC’s Olympic Program Commission.
In 2005 the International Olympic Committee dropped Baseball! from the 2012 program. In the 1990s the IOC decided to cap the number of sports included in any Summer Olympics to 28. Baseball, given its regional influence in Americas and Japan, did not find much support with the IOC’s European side and the sport is neither popular in other continents like Africa and much of Asia.
With a huge fan following in Japan, efforts are underway to restore the popular game when the Olympics will be held locally here in 2020. Baseball will miss 2016 Rio Olympics, and an avid Japanese and Korean lobby is working for an affirmative decision on men’s baseball and women’s softball at a December 8, 2014 meeting in Monaco of the International Olympic Committee.
